Newsletter (Q3, 2003) Welcome to our third Newsletter for 2003. We are already into the second half of the calendar year, and for many of us that means finalising budgets and planning development activities for the year ahead. So what are the key areas to focus on, and how can you ensure that your budgets are being spent in the most effective manner possible? In this newsletter, we address three areas our clients are telling us are particular areas of focus: We hope this information is of value to you. Please do not hesitate to call if you would like to know more. eBusiness Will Help Reduce Costs and Streamline Operations eBusiness is now becoming part of the normal business process, and is helping many companies to reduce costs in the Value-chain. Look for areas where it is possible to automate expensive manual tasks, or tasks which are not time critical, and so can be scheduled at a time convenient to the user. Similarly, look for processes that involve a number of different people - either within the organisation, or in collaboration with business partners external to the organisation. When looking for savings, focus particularly on implementation implications, and impact to the bottom line. Obviously, benefits will vary from organisation to organisation, however here is a checklist of some items you may care to consider: Internal (across the Intranet)
Identity Management Underpins Online Service Delivery Another area attracting a lot of interest is that of "Identity Management". These days we are increasingly conscious of the need to maintain security, both in terms of access to physical and digital assets (access to electronic customer and company confidential information). Identity Management is a process by which a company identifies an individual and then controls what assets they have access to. Typically this is done by assigning an individual (or group of like individuals - e.g. customers or business partners) a "role", describing what access is required to fulfill the duties of that role, and then ensuring that the corresponding permissions are given to access relevant computer systems, physical office areas etc. Clearly then, while Identity Management is underpinned by computer systems, of greater importance is an understanding of the business processes underpinning the defined Roles. We would suggest that these business issues and processes are clearly understood, the costs, risks and implications assessed and the required roles defined, prior to selecting computer software to support identity management. In coming weeks, we will develop a whitepaper to further explore these issues. Broadband Growth is Gathering Pace Whether you are a service provider, or a content provider, Broadband is an area that is becoming increasingly important. Improving market conditions for companies and the emergence of wireless broadband is driving demand for faster more reliable access to information and services. Our current work indicates that the adoption of Broadband will facilitate cost reduction by users as they outsource non-core business processes. For providers, we believe maturation of the market will force a move to a more user-centric view of product and service offerings. The market is at an interesting juncture, and policy decisions from Government might prove catalytic. Recent Government initiatives are aimed at promoting more effective use of Broadband by Australian industry to improve competitiveness. This is being done through the coordination of a series of education and knowledge sharing initiatives.
